Ultraviolet Pilot Study

A Texas-Sized UV Pilot: Pursuing Alternative Disinfection

Alongside CDM Smith and CP&Y, Garver recently completed field operations of a UV pilot of ultraviolet disinfection processes to evaluate replacement of the Trinity River Authority's current chlorination/dechlorination facilities at the 162 MGD Central Regional Wastewater System. The first phase of the project required simultaneously pilot-testing four parallel UV disinfection processes, along with a parallel peracetic acid feed and reactor, for a combined flow through all units of 25 MGD. The second phase of the project evaluated high-rate clarification of the secondary effluent prior to UV disinfection, in addition to ongoing operation and testing of the peracetic acid reactor.

"Garver's field operation of the large-scale pilot included operation and maintenance of each unit, continuous sampling, and extensive laboratory procedures," said Project Manager Lance Klement. "We're evaluating cuttingedge disinfection technologies to allow TRA to optimize the design of a new technology for one of the largest treatment facilities in Texas."

"The data the Garver field team gathered by managing the day-to-day operations of this complex pilot study will ensure this future UV facility will be optimized for performance and efficiency," said Water Team Leader Jeff Sober.
