Process Mechanical Group Leader

Location: College Station, Texas

Position Summary:
As part of the Texas Water Design Center for Garver, this Process Mechanical Group Leader will be responsible for building, leading and managing an integral group of engineering professionals in support of various projects for Garver’s Texas Water Design Center.  Diversity in high-volume, custom plant projects will allow this engineer the opportunity to be hands-on with design, directly involved with internal and external clients, provide mentorship to team members, and actively participate in marketing and business development initiatives.
 
What you’ll do:
Generally, the responsibilities of this role will entail providing personal technical contribution, team leadership, and management necessary for taking projects from conceptual planning to construction ready documents, including facility and equipment layouts, design calculations, equipment vendor coordination, management and coordination of discipline activities, coordination with regional offices and regulatory agencies, as well as quality assurance and control.  Ideal candidates shall be capable of, both individually and through leadership and management of a multi-disciplined team, designing major process facilities for a wide variety of water and wastewater treatment facility projects. This candidate shall also have a working knowledge of associated systems including pumping, piping, control system strategies, PIDs, HVAC requirements, life safety, fire protection, plumbing, and yard piping systems
 
Day to day individual and team leadership responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Supporting regional teams with water / wastewater and reuse treatment related detailed design, construction, business development, planning, and marketing activities
  • Developing conceptual level alternatives, designs, reports, and Opinions of Probable Costs for water and wastewater treatment systems
  • Developing detailed designs, reports, and Opinions of Probable Costs, including contract documents (plans and specifications)
  • Managing multi-discipline project teams for detailed design services for treatment facilities
  • Preparing design calculations, coordinating with other disciplines and BIM/CADD team activities on projects, coordinating with regional Garver offices and regulating agencies, construction cost estimating, and quality assurance and control
  • Providing Construction Services support, including, but not limited to construction administration, management, and resident project representative services
  • Managing and mentoring teams, coordinating schedules, monitoring project budgets, and ensuring delivery of quality work products which adhere to Garver standardization
  • Be included in client meetings, industry conferences, and serve as a subject matter expert on behalf of Garver and the Water Business Line
 
In addition, the Process Mechanical Group Leader will be responsible for:
  • Recruiting top talent for the process mechanical team
  • Managing, mentoring and professional development for process mechanical team members
  • Leading the detailed design through coordination with other disciplines
  • Planning, leveling, managing and executing process mechanical workload
  • Developing detailed plans and specifications
  • Coordinating schedules
  • Managing project teams
  • Quality program compliance, including ensuring delivery of quality work products that adhere to Garver standardization
  • Process mechanical standards and tools development, procurement, and training
  • Maintaining a positive team attitude and interpersonal effectiveness to recruit, develop and maintain an efficient and productive process mechanical team
 
Some travel may be required for business development purposes, including proposal development, interviews, knowledge transfer sessions, and industry related conference attendance.  Project specific travel may also be required for site assessments, project workshops, design review meetings, and support during construction.
 
Due to the collaborative nature of coordination for large infrastructure projects, candidates must have the ability to seek out and resolve issues through close interaction with other project team members.  The process mechanical group leader will also be responsible for coordinating process workload with Garver’s Central Water Design Center.
 
Qualified candidates must have the following capabilities and the ability to perform the following routine functions:
  • Be technically competent with water or wastewater engineering and civil engineering
  • Develop and negotiate contract scope and fees.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Manage multi-disciplined project budgets including the development of detailed project instructions, scope of work, level of effort, and associated man-hour estimates.
  • Be responsible for time management and work product quality.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date project accounting on all assigned projects.
  • Conduct written and oral project reporting for clients and Team Leader. Reporting will include project design status, upcoming milestones, project accounting, percent completes, progress reports, etc.
  • Prepare and execute Quality Assurance and Quality Control Plans.
  • Lead internal and external project workshops.
  • Be responsible for continuing education and learning based on project needs, as well as overall needs of the team.
  • Effectively delegate project-specific activities and supervise work of other project team members.
  • Mentor, equip, train, develop, and engage junior team members to become effective water professionals and undertake increasingly more complex assignments and responsibilities as they grow.
  • Support the Regional Teams as the primary point of contact with the WDC  through the life of the project and by providing Client Service Management including, but not limited to presentations at workshops, council meetings, etc.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • 10 or more years of similar technical experience with no less than 2-year experience in project/team leadership.
  • Technically competent in process engineering design
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Ability to attain Texas PE in 6 months.
  • Previous experience as manager in charge of process and process mechanical design, including detailed plans and specifications, for major water and wastewater treatment plant improvements projects.
  • Overall understanding of water and wastewater treatment plant systems in a campus-wide environment
  • Basic understanding of the multi-disciplined practices (i.e. process, surveying, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control) required for the implementation of water/wastewater infrastructure improvements
  • Demonstrated experience performing process equipment evaluation, sizing and cost estimating
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Experience giving presentations for clients and professional organizations
  • Strong teaching and coaching skills adaptable to various experience levels
  • Cost estimation experience
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Project and Outlook
  • Passionate about the contribution of water and wastewater facility design in the protection of the public health and welfare and community sustainability
  • Capable of flexible and enthusiastic collaboration with Owners, Facility Staff, Contractors, and other involved parties and water professional to provide outstanding service and project results  
Preferred Skills
  • NCEES Registration.
  • Experience with Autodesk software to include AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D.
  • Master’s degree in civil or environmental engineering.
  • Proficiency in process modeling software GPS-X, Simba, Sumo, BioWin or similar.
  • Previous experience with plumbing, fire protection, life safety, and building mechanical systems typical to water and wastewater facilities designed for occupation.
  • Active participation in water-related professional organizations such as AWWA, WEF, WRF.
