Cynthiana-Harrison County Airport

Airfield Improvements

The Cynthiana-Harrison County Airport has been facing a growing safety concern due to its lack of a parallel taxiway, requiring aircraft to backtaxi on the runway, which was itself in need of repair. The airport operates on a tight budget with most of its revenue coming from hangar rent and fuel sales being used each month to keep the lights on. The airport lies in the bend of the South Fork of the Licking River, and most people believed additional development such as an additional taxiway in this area was impossible at a reasonable cost.

"Garver's Lexington Aviation Team met with the FAA and the Kentucky Department of Aviation to try and secure funding," said Garver Project Manager Wes Mittlesteadt. "Once those agency realized the critical nature of these improvement, Garver provided a design that was successfully bid and constructed at approximately 51% less cost and stayed within the provided grant amounts without amendments."

The new taxiway will greatly reduce the amount of time spent on the runway, which will increase safety for all users by creating a smooth operational flow of traffic around their fuel system. The airport is known for having some of the cheapest fuel prices in the area, which draws aircraft from surrounding states. It is not uncommon to see aircraft lining up for fuel at the airport, so the ability to provide efficient and safe operations around fueling aircraft will be of great benefit to the airport.

"The airport needed a proven consulting engineer to get the job done, from start to finish, with the available funds from the FAA and KDA funding. And that's exactly what Garver did," said Airport Board Chairman Bobby Craft.
