AL/MS Water was created to serve Alabama and Mississippi’s water professionals by providing a single conference where collaboration, education and leadership thrives. The initiative is to provide a central event for operators, equipment manufacturers, equipment representatives and service providers to cultivate new ideas to improve one of our greatest resources – water. School's Out for the Summer: Rehabilitation of Helena Intermediate School Lift Station
An aging wastewater station caused a number of issues for the Helena Intermediate School, including corrosion to the plant and a significant odor adjacent to the school’s playground. Garver worked with Shelby County Schools to aid in the remedy of the situation, but only had a two-month window to design a rehabilitation plan and allow construction to take place while school was out of session for summer break. This presentation will discuss how Garver was able to expedite the rehabilitation design and manage construction to meet the required timeline for Helena Utility Board and Shelby County Schools.

Phosphorus removal has been identified as an important need in both Alabama and Mississippi, as well as other states that impact the Gulf of Mexico. This presentation will go over different processes used to remove phosphorus at wastewater treatment plants, along with examples from a low-cost implementation in an existing facility.

Dewatering 101: Design and Operational Considerations for Your Dewatering Facility
Dewatering is a key piece of the solids treatment puzzle, and while several different dewatering technologies exist, not all are created equal. This presentation will review the pros and cons of the various dewatering technologies, as well as key operational and design considerations for a successful dewatering facility. It will also include lessons learned from various projects and present results from three different dewatering evaluations that each concluded a different recommendation base on site-specific cost considerations and goals and objectives of operations staff.

Bad Record Drawings? How 3-D Surveying Can Be Used to Reduce Change Orders
With recent advances in 3-D scanning, it has become more affordable and easier to obtain for survey crews as it can quickly and accurately scan gallery piping in days versus weeks with survey grade accuracy. This presentation will offer a case study of the Hilliard N. Fletcher Water Resource Reclamation Facility in Tuscaloosa, and how utilizing 3-D pipe scanning led to accurate record drawings, as well as helping develop standard operating procedures for the plant staff. This not only saved the client money in terms of survey crew time, but also increased the accuracy of design drawings.

Master Planning Resilient Water Solutions for the Future
The City of Huntsville has experienced unprecedented growth for the last 20 years, and to prepare for the next 20, Huntsville Utilities teamed with Garver to develop a master plan for their service area. This included research and analysis of the existing facilities and capabilities for approximately 100,000 customers, as well as looking ahead and projecting needs, future demand scenarios and growth projections for a 20-year planning horizon. These results were consolidated into a Master Planning Document to assist Huntsville Utilities responsibly budget and plan for the future to come.

Attacking a Two-Headed Monster: Addressing Historic SSO's Within the City of Decatur Through Collection System Upgrades and WWTP Improvements
Often, sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) events are thought to be exclusively a collection system issue. Whether those issues are caused by inflow/infiltration, insufficient pump station capacity, or undersized piping, the quick reaction is to attribute a SSO to one of these reasons and not consider what might have happened downstream. This presentation will provide a general overview of historic issues at a pair of wastewater facilities in Decatur, the approach to size the new collector while realizing the benefits of free discharge into the WWTP, and discuss the rational and approach to design of the new IPS facility.

The goal of any technical presentation is that the content be understood, remembered, and believed. But technical presenters often don’t know where to begin to create a presentation, leading to apprehension, procrastination, and a lack of confidence. This presentation will look at the Assertion-Evidence Methodology, which not only increases the audience’s understanding of the technical content, but also leads to a deeper understanding of the content by the presenter, resulting in a newfound confidence in their own content and ultimately being able to better convey that understanding.
