Hydraulics & Hydrology Project Manager Alan Dennis, PE, CFM | 1D and 2D Hydraulic Modeling Applications | Tuesday, Sept. 21, 4-4:30 p.m.

Are two dimensions always better than one? Are three better than two? Significant advancements in computational power and modeling capabilities have raised these questions for hydraulic modelers. Rapid adoption of 2D modeling in hydraulic analysis and floodplain mapping make 2D modeling possible, but how does one know when it should be used? This presentation will discuss the practical differences in 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling by using actual project examples to illustrate hydraulic model applications. Practical considerations of 1D and 2D modeling will be discussed, with the goal of equipping floodplain managers with the information they need to understand the pros and cons of each type of hydraulic modeling.
