Garver, City of Del City honored with ACEC National Recognition Award
Thanks to the ingenuity of Garver’s expert Water Team, the City of Del City, Oklahoma not only received immediate upgrades to its aging wastewater treatment plant and processes, but also saved $1.2 million in the process.
The project improvements and cost savings were so impactful to the City’s future that the American Council of Engineering Companies recently presented the project with a National Recognition Award. The award was presented during ACEC’s Engineering Excellence Awards Gala, which was held virtually for the first time.
“These improvements not only provide the City with a state-of-the art system to serve residents for the next 25 years, but the savings helped the City identify the best use of remaining loan funds,” said Garver Water Implementation Leader Kyle Kruger, PE. “We’re proud and excited to see that these upgrades helped the City address additional improvements without having to seek rate increases.”
Garver’s design of headworks upgrades, implementation of a new cloth media filtration process, and integration of one of the first non-contact UV disinfection systems in the state, provided the most comprehensive upgrades to Del City’s WWTP in more than three decades.
By making the most of the facility’s existing footprint, Garver was able to fit upgrades into the existing space and prevent the City from purchasing costly real estate for the new structures. The old facility was kept online during construction by carefully including construction sequencing into design, allowing the City to maintain service to their community throughout the project. Additionally, the new, non-contact UV disinfection system included replacing failing sand filters with cloth media filters to improve effluent water quality and reduce energy consumption.
This new system eliminated the need to complete annual risk assessments for the use of chlorine gas. All these recommendations led to significant cost savings for the City that resulted in additional improvements.
