Chowdhury named AWWA Water Science and Research Division Trustee
The world’s largest organization of water supply professionals, the American Water Works Association (AWWA), has appointed Garver Water Practice Leader Zaid Chowdhury, Ph.D., PE, BCEE, a trustee for their Water Science and Research Division.
“Identifying research needs, supporting research that safeguards our supply of safe drinking water, and ensuring that research is in compliance with all pertinent laws and regulations is just one vital aspect of effective water management that AWWA focuses on.”

The Division’s purpose is to advance, amplify, and distribute scientific and technical research that ensures sufficient quantities of safe, clean drinking water. Chowdhury will serve a three-year term beginning this month at the Annual Conference & Exhibition (ACE) in Toronto.
“I’m pleased to continue my work with AWWA as a trustee,” Chowdhury said. “Identifying research needs, supporting research that safeguards our supply of safe drinking water, and ensuring that research is in compliance with all pertinent laws and regulations is just one vital aspect of effective water management that AWWA focuses on.”
Chowdhury’s 35 years of experience have well prepared him for this role. For example, he has worked closely with USEPA during the development of Stage 1 and 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts (D/DBP) Rules. Chowdhury continues to assist the USEPA as a technical analyst in their current efforts to revise the MDBP Rule cluster. He also worked with over 400 treatment plants to solve their treatment issues some of which are to address the D/DBP Rule. He has also done extensive research on various contaminants, including arsenic, hexavalent chromium, and PFAS and technologies such as GAC adsorption, biological filtration, Anion Exchange, novel adsorbents, and conventional treatment technologies.
And Chowdhury is already a committed and involved member of AWWA. He is a distinguished member of AWWA’s Technology Advisory Workgroup and served on AWWA’s Water Science Journal editorial board for an issue focused exclusively on PFAS. An active researcher and water quality field professional, he continues to advance scientific and technical research and to help utilities adapt to new regulations.
“It’s a privilege to work with a professional of Zaid’s caliber,” said Garver Director of Water Services Jeff Sober. “His dedication to advancing research and developing sound treatment strategies for new regulations is inspiring and, more importantly, incredibly valuable to communities.”
