Intersection design requires a specialized understanding of design criteria, traffic operations, and standards. As part of the design process, we consider the following components:
- Pavement markings must clearly delineate vehicular movements approaching and/or travelling through the intersection.
- The intersection radii must be adequate to accommodate trucks and large vehicles.
- The appropriate number and length of storage lanes must be provided (based on capacity analyses and the traffic signal operating plan) to adequately handle turning movement volumes.
- Facilities must be included to assist the safe travel of pedestrians.
As an alternative to traditional intersections, Garver has designed roundabouts, which can be safer, increase traffic flow, require less maintenance, and improve aesthetics. Garver also has experience analyzing and designing more complex intersections such as single-point urban intersections (SPUI), diverging diamond intersections, continuous flow intersections (CFI), and J-Turn intersections.
