TRA CRWS Headworks A Fine Screen Facility
Optimizing screenings capture through customized design criteria
Garver’s services for Trinity River Authority (TRA) Central Regional Wastewater System (CRWS) (405 MGD Peak 2 Hour) Headworks A Fine Screen Facility project included design of a new, multilevel $26 million-dollar fine screen facility. Having been plagued by rags damaging downstream processes, Garver and TRA identified the need as part of a master planning process.
Custom design criteria for the screens and channel were developed using advanced hydraulic and computational fluid dynamic modeling to determine optimal flow splits and a specific velocity though the screens to mitigate screenings carry through. Screening technologies were evaluated and ranked on lifecycle costs and the ability to meet all custom design criteria, with two manufacturers qualifying to bid 3 millimeter screens. A competitive pre-purchase bid document was used to select the manufacturer.
The facility was designed with a custom hydraulic sluiceway for screenings handling, biological odor control, and four dumpster loadout areas. Constructability of these improvements was evaluated by preparing a construction sequencing plan with considerations for maintenance of plant operations (MOPO), temporary facility requirements, and a phased approach to testing and start-up.
