WLD Runway Rehabilitation

Runway 17-35 Rehabilitation

Garver provided design services to rehabilitate Runway 17-35 at Strother Field in Cowley County, Kansas, which also required close work with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Strother Field Commission, GE Aviation, and the contractor to develop construction plans that allowed operations to be maintained during construction. Garver’s plan called for phased construction, which ensured little to no interruption. The runway exhibited medium- to high-severity pavement distress, and in three months Garver designed a bituminous overlay to provide additional pavement strength yet limited the grading on shoulders. In addition to improving airport safety, Garver’s ability to communicate with all stakeholders allowed the project to be completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

It was imperative we work closely with the FAA, the Strother Field Commission, GE Aviation, and the contractor to develop construction sequencing that allowed aircraft operations to be maintained on the runway throughout construction.
