The Point is a new 12,000 square foot urban park in the middle of the MidCity District in Huntsville, Alabama, a new 120-acre mixed use development on the site of a former regional mall. The park is located on a triangular island in the middle of MidCity Drive, which can be closed to traffic on weekends, creating a 1-block long walkable event space. From the north, a small seating node flanked by a sinuous custom wood and weathering steel structure built around a water feature welcomes visitors.
Meandering decomposed granite and stone pathways and side paths lead visitors through a dense landscape of shrubs, understory trees, and larger native shade tree species into a central lawn space that provides a tranquil respite from the growing MidCity District. The central lawn features movable tables and chairs located near a food truck bay in the southeast corner of the site, which is covered by a custom weathering steel shade structure fabricated locally. The perimeter of the park is lined with small seating nodes nestled among the landscape and feature stone walls topped by wood slat benches. Landscape lighting creates a comfortable space that glows and becomes a nighttime centerpiece of MidCity District.
