US 412 over the Verdigris River
Inspection and design services for rehabilitation and widening
Garver provided inspection, preliminary engineering, and final design services for the rehabilitation and widening of US 412 East Bound over the Verdigris River. The first task was to perform an arm’s length inspection of the existing bridge to identify condition and repair recommendations. For the inspection of the superstructure and substructures, condition ratings for the deck, joints, beams, diaphragms, bearings, piers, columns, abutments, and piles were cataloged. After the inspection, a detailed structural analysis of the existing girders was performed using to determine remaining fatigue life. For this analysis, historical traffic data that was provided by ODOT to estimate the remaining fatigue life of the girders.
Two bridge options were preliminarily designed and estimated. The first reused the existing beams while adding two more beams to widen the deck surface to meet current roadway requirements, and the second replaces the girders with five new girders. Ultimately ODOT decided to replace the existing superstructure. For final design, the superstructure replacement alternative was chosen. Additionally, all substructures, except for the river piers were replaced due to inadequate design for current practices. For the river piers, additional substructure units were added, and tied to the existing to accommodate the widened superstructure.
