Decatur Utilities Industrial Area Booster Pump Station
The new booster pump station was designed to support the needs of a growing industrial area and integrate into the existing system seamlessly
Garver provided design, bidding, and construction administration services for a new booster pump station (BPS) to serve the Northwest Industrial Park area of the Decatur Utilities (DU) distribution system. This portion of the distribution system was previously served through a 10 MG ground storage tank (GST) that needed rehabilitation, but the existing distribution system configuration wouldn’t allow DU to provide reliable water service to its industrial customers if this tank was taken offline.
During the conceptual effort, Garver updated and evaluated several locations for the proposed BPS within the distribution system using a comprehensive water model. The model was used to locate a suitable location that would provide an uninterrupted water supply when taking the 10 MG GST offline. The location would also allow for the seamless integration of the tank once rehabilitation was complete and the tank was placed back into service.
Based on the selected location, the BPS was designed to accommodate the anticipated growth of the industrial customer base by including an additional pumping unit for increased pumping capacity and overall facility reliability. The design also considered and incorporated the necessary capacity for future improvements that will address historically low operating pressures within areas outside of the industrial area. This will be accomplished by creating a new high-pressure zone through simple valving modifications and the installation of limited interconnecting piping.
