State Highway 20 Realignment Project
Garver helps ODOT relieve traffic congestion in growing Claremore
State Highway 20 (SH-20) used to run straight through downtown Claremore, Oklahoma, crossing a heavily used railroad line several times. With a growing population, increasing traffic, and no railroad overpass, traffic had steadily become more congested and emergency services had been impeded numerous times by stopped or slow moving trains. A large percentage of the daily traffic - more than 12,000 vehicles per day - was freight traffic with no way to reconnect to a main route without going through downtown.
To address these issues, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA), City of Claremore, and Rogers County worked together to complete the SH-20 Realignment Project, which significantly upgraded the corridor connecting Owasso and Claremore, added new bridges over Highway 66 and the parallel railroad, and connected a new interchange at Flint Road and the Will Rogers Turnpike.
Garver’s Transportation and Field Services teams partnered with these stakeholders, providing design services for four and a half miles of the ODOT-led SH-20 realignment, including two large drainage structures and the bridge over Highway 66 and the BNSF railroad. Garver also provided construction engineering and inspection (CE&I) and resident engineering services for this important connection, which includes more than seven miles of new concrete highway alignment.
